This year’s Crosspool Festival is rounding off this weekend with two big community events.

From 2pm today on Coldwell Lane sports field (CDYST) the Summer Fayre takes place. There is loads going on, including live music, entertainment, dancing, a bouncy castle, side shows, games plus stalls selling crafts, flowers, food and drinks. It’ll be a great afternoon out for all the family.

Lydgate Green: location for Picnic in the Park on Sunday

And then tomorrow at 12.30pm why not head to Lydgate Green (the junction Lydgate Lane/Lydgate Hall Crescent) for Picnic in the Park? The four Crosspool/Sandygate churches host this event to mark the closing of the festival.

Enjoy music from the Chapeltown Silver Band and a brief talk from Ven. Martyn Snow, Archdeacon of Sheffield. Bring your rugs, picnics and children!

People from all over Sheffield flocked to buy local food, drink, gifts and crafts at Sunday’s Crosspool street market on Selborne Road.

The beautiful weather meant that visitors could make an afternoon of it and also enjoy music and dance performances from Lydgate school pupils. Many of the local shops also got behind the event and opened up for the day.

Photos are below in both gallery and slideshow form.

There are plenty more events at Crosspool Festival this week, including the big Summer Fayre on Saturday and Community Picnic on Sunday.

Local gardens open up for festival – video and photos

Saturday’s Open Gardens event once again saw proud local residents open up their private gardens to the public to raise money for charities.

Green-fingered locals showed off their plants, flowers, vegetables and garden displays and served tea and cake to visitors. Nine gardens were available to look around this year.

You can see some photos below from some of the gardens – and watch a video showing the model railway installed in Dave Mason’s Den Bank Close back garden.

La Dolce Vita restaurant: now open

Crosspudlains flocked to a party last night to celebrate the launch of a new local Italian restaurant.

The owners of La Dolce Vita laid on free tasters of pizza, focaccia, bruschetta and a selection of pastries, all washed down with Italian wine.

La Dolce Vita is based in the old A’Villa Caruso unit on Sandygate Road. The restaurant has been completely redecorated with clean white walls and a small drinks bar in the back corner.

It is a family-run affair, with Luciana and Gianpaolo preparing the food and Nirvana managing the restaurant with her husband Matthew.

The pizzeria is now open for bookings on 0114 266 9811.

Sheffield Wednesday team to play in Crosspool

For the second year running, Sheffield Wednesday have included a trip to Sandygate in their pre-season schedule.

A ‘Wednesday XI’ team will take on Hallam FC on Wednesday 27 July, kick off 7:45pm. This means that it is unlikely to be the full Wednesday first team playing – they are also playing at Barnsley the night before.

Adult tickets are £5, Junior and OAP tickets are £3.

In 2010 a strong Wednesday first team saw off the Countrymen 9-0.

Darwin House Garden Party success

Residents, staff and families joined together to take advantage of the many activities and festivities of a garden party organised by staff and volunteers of Darwin House.

Visitors who flocked to the grounds of the home on Darwin Lane last Saturday 18 June were determined not to let a day of typical British weather – hot sunshine, wind and a downpour of rain – dampen their enthusiasm and spirit to enjoy the event.

The Garden Party had everything: a tombola, guess the name of the fluffy dog, bric-a-brac, jewellery and craft stalls, an art exhibition, kiddies’ corner, cakes and refreshments.

In addition, a stunning marquee housed auctions, raffles, a flower show and afternoon of entertainment and fun, provided by Tapton School and the Carousel Theatre Group.

The group’s production of ‘Best of British’, a collection of jokes, sketches and old favourite songs to sing along to, gave a reminder of the glory days of post-war Britain.

The audience relived the pleasure of radio shows such as variety band box (Arthur Askey) and The Goons, the celebration of the festival of Britain, the coronation, the birth of muffin the mule and the joy of the hits from the 40s and 50s, all brought to life by a cast of two professional actors.

Everyone had a wonderful day raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Society.
