Free home computer tuition for housebound; tablet course postponed until January

Over the next six weeks expert (DBS checked) tutors will be on hand to deliver free tuition sessions, either with iPads or internet-ready laptops, to the homes of housebound/lonely/isolated people, or those suffering from ill health.

The aim of the project is to break down loneliness and isolation by helping people:

  • stay in touch with friends and family
  • order shopping
  • save time and hassle and money dealing with online public services
  • access health websites
  • keep the mind active
  • look up hobbies and interests on any subject from gardening and cooking to knitting.

Autumn Spectacular charity classical/jazz music concert

On Saturday 16 November the Yorkshire Wind Orchestra and Sheffield Youth Big Band present an Autumn Spectacular of classical and jazz music.

The evening starts at 7pm at St Luke’s Church in Lodge Moor and is in aid of Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity

It starts at 2pm and features stalls, refreshments, produce, a tombola, books and cakes.

Join the Beavers for hedge planting on Hagg Copse this Saturday, 9 November at 10am.

Tea and coffee will be supplied, but if you could bring your own gardening gloves and tools that would be a big help.

Hagg Copse is a community green area on the corner of Coldwell Lane and Manchester Road, maintained by Crosspool Forum.

Once Upon a Sensory Story autumn session

Once Upon a Sensory Story will return to Lounge@Crosspool on Monday 28 October.

Children aged 5 and under are invited to come along and join in the interactive story session between 10 and 11am.

Sensory stories allow children to use all their senses whilst retelling a story. This time the group will be squishing blackberries, rustling leaves and playing with water as we help Harry Hedgehog prepare for winter.

The session will finish with the singing of autumn songs and a tasty snack. The cafe opens at 11am so you could stay for lunch too.

What are your thoughts on the Streets Ahead project so far?

A representative from Amey will be in attendance at this week’s Crosspool Forum Open Meeting/AGM, giving you the chance to ask questions and make comments on the progress of the project to resurface Sheffield roads, pavements and replace streetlights.

The meeting is on Thursday 24 October at St Columba’s Church and starts at 7pm.

You’ll also be able to give your concerns on local issues to local councillors, the police and council officials. A provisional agenda can be downloaded below.

Hallam cricketers switch to football for Sandygate event

Sandygate, the oldest football ground in the world
Sandygate will host a footballer v cricketer match on Sunday

Hallam Sports Club cricketers will swap their bats and pads for a football and boots at Sandygate on Sunday 13 October when they take on footballers from the same club.

Kick off for the cricketers v footballers match is at 1.30pm, although the ground and clubhouse will be open from 12.30pm onwards. Teams will be made up from a combination of staff and players – older players on the football side including former England midfielder Chris Waddle.

There is no entry fee – you can just come along and enjoy the game.

The event is part of Tapton Hill Church celebrating 100 years in their present home.

It starts at 7pm. Entry is £3 and includes refreshments. There are no tickets: just turn up and pay on the door.
