South Yorkshire Police are asking Crosspool residents to fill in this survey to help develop their neighbourhood policing and improve the service they provide.
The group has been in discussions with a private investor who has offered to buy the freehold of The Plough and lease it back to the community group on favourable terms over an initial 10-year period. The private investor would cover the acquisition and external refurbishment costs.
The £120,000 would cover the initial start-up costs of the business.
If you are interested in making an investment in The Plough contact the group directly by emailing ploughsandygate@gmail.com or Facebook for a copy of the pledge form.
A public meeting is also scheduled to take place on Thursday 15 June, 7pm at St Columba’s on Manchester Road.
We have formed the Plough Community Benefit Society Ltd and have registered with the Financial Conduct Authority. This means that we are now in a position to raise funds through a Community Share Issue.
Originally, our plan was to buy the freehold of the Plough which had been put on the market for offers in excess of £550,000. We commissioned a valuation from an independent consultant who valued the pub at £435,000. Clearly raising that kind of money plus funds for refurbishment would have been a tough challenge.
However, very recently, we have been in discussions with a private investor who has offered to buy the freehold of the Plough and lease it back to the community group on favourable terms over an initial 10 year period.
Financially, this makes our target much more achievable. The private investor would cover the acquisition and external refurbishment costs. We would be responsible for refitting the interior of the pub.
We are looking to raise £120,000 through a Community Share Issue which would cover the initial start-up costs of the business.
We are now seeking to gauge the level of support for a potential Community Share Issue. Shares will be valued at £1 and sold in batches with a minimum investment of £250 rising to the legal maximum of £20,000. All shareholders will have equal voting rights irrespective of the value of their holding.
If you would be interested in making an investment in the Plough, please contact us directly by email for a copy of our Pledge Form: ploughsandygate@gmail.com. Or contact us through Facebook messenger.
Please consider making a financial and social investment in the Plough as both a traditional local pub and a thriving community asset.
We will be in Crosspool precinct tomorrow morning if you would like to talk to us and we are planning to hold a public meeting on June 15th.
Martin Swift, winner of a Pre-School Learning Alliance Volunteer Award
A local volunteer has won an award for his outstanding voluntary work at Crosspool Community Pre-School.
Martin Swift began volunteering at the pre-school in 2011 and his commitment and contribution to the charity was recognised when he was presented with The Pre-School Learning Alliance Volunteer Award for the North Division at an event in Leeds.
Pre-school Manager Lauren Hodgson said: “Martin became our chairperson in 2011 when his eldest daughter attended pre-school. His son has also attended pre-school last year and he has another child to follow.
“He has shown a high level of personal commitment and made a valuable contribution to the running of our committee and pre-school. This has enabled our community based pre-school to continue to run and provide high quality education and care for local families.
“Martin has been very supportive in helping implement changes such as our lunch time club which enabled children to attended mornings and afternoon sessions. This has helped working families, provided a social opportunity for the children to eat together and generated much-needed revenue for pre-school and helped us be financially sustainable.
“When pre-school was flooded in 2012 he helped with our insurance claim and the big clean up. As a result, pre-school was only closed to families for two days as we relocated into our main school building.
“Martin was a fantastic support during our Ofsted inspection in 2015 and was available to talk at length to the inspector about his role as chair of the committee and pre-school’s strengths and priorities for improvement. We were very pleased with our ‘good’ judgement. He was proactive in our recruitment for a new deputy manager and helped with the restructure of the staff team. He spent many hours developing the interview process and chaired the interview panel.
“Martin attends and chairs the regular half term committee meetings and is available for conversations throughout the week. He regularly comes to visit the setting and is a familiar face to the children, families and staff team. He helps with any financial matters that arise and makes suggestions and contributions for our policies and procedures. He also helps with any issues or concerns that are raised and helps develop our plan for improvement.
“Martin’s support has been vital for the effective running of Pre-School and I really value his support and contribution as the chair of our pre-school management committee. The award reflects Martin’s hard work and responsibility as an outstanding volunteer as our nominated chairperson which is essential for us to continue to run as a pre-school for children in the community.”
Martin is now through to the National Pre- School Alliance Learning awarding in London on 16 June.

Night closures on Manchester Road from 22 May 2017
Parts of Manchester Road will be closed from 7pm to 7am for four weeks from Monday 22 May 2017.
A letter to residents from the Streets Ahead project explains:
8 May 2017
Our reference: A21 Manchester Road
Dear Resident/Business
ROAD RESURFACING – NIGHT WORKING
As part of the Streets Ahead works we are writing to let you know that we are soon to resurface the A57 Manchester Road from the junction of Rivelin Valley Road to the Derbyshire boundary. The work will be completed in stages.
This work is due to start week commencing 22 May and the work will take approximately 2 weeks to complete.
The work in this area has been scheduled to take place on nights between the hours of 7pm and 7am; this is to minimise disruption. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and any noise you may experience.
Please note this work will be completed under a road closure and there will be no on-street parking on the section of road that we are resurfacing during working hours. Vehicles left on-street may be towed away and you will need to pay a fee to have your vehicle released.
Temporary road signs will be displayed five days before work starts, confirming the dates of work and parking restrictions.
Parking and access arrangements
Access to properties on the roads we are working on maybe limited during working hours. Most roads will be open and on-street parking will be as normal at other times. Please let our on-site supervisor know if you need vehicle access to your property for urgent reasons. Pedestrian access and access for emergency vehicles will be available at all times.
If you are away during the period in which the works are scheduled to take place please avoid parking your car on the road. Our work schedule is heavily dependent on the weather and can be affected by unforeseen circumstances so it may be necessary to change the start date at short notice. We will tow cars that are delaying our works.
Bus service and bin collection changes
Changes to your regular bus service or diversion routes will be publicised by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport (SYPTE). Please check your local bus stop or http://www.travelsouthyorkshire.com for any route changes. You can also call Traveline on 01709 515151 or follow @TravelSYorks on Twitter.
If there are any changes to your bin collection days these will be communicated by Veolia at http://www.veolia.co.uk/sheffield on Twitter @Recycle4Shef or by calling 0114 273 4567 between 8am and 6pm.
Road Safety
We are working with the Council’s Road Safety Team to remind all road users to watch out for others on the road and think about their needs. Please be patient and take extra care during road works. Make sure to allow extra time for your journey. Stick to the designated diversion routes and always drive within the speed limit and to suit the conditions of the road. The difference of a few miles per hour can mean the difference between life and death. Think! Slow down.
Bogus Callers
If you are approached by someone claiming to be from Amey, the Council or connected to the Streets Ahead project offering to resurface your drive please do not handover any money. If possible take the callers details, including their vehicle registration number and we will inform the Police. All Streets Ahead and Amey employees carry identity cards. If you have any doubts about the identity of a person carrying an identity card please call customer services.
