Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime to Attend Crosspool Forum Meeting Tomorrow, Thursday 31 July

Following the merger of the Police and Crime Commissioner role into the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, Mayor Oliver Coppard has appointed Kilvinder Vigurs as Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime.

Kilvinder is keen to hear directly from residents about the priorities and concerns relating to policing and crime in our area. We are pleased to confirm that Ms Vigurs has agreed to  attend our next Crosspool Forum meeting, taking place tomorrow, Thursday 31 July at 7:00pm, at St. Columba’s Church, Manchester Road.

Ms Vigurs brings a wealth of experience, having begun her career as a probation officer and most recently served as Regional Probation Director for Yorkshire and the Humber. Her responsibilities include delivering the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Plan, chairing the Local Criminal Justice Board and the Safer Roads Partnership, and overseeing the Violence Reduction Unit.

Working alongside the Mayor, she will help steer improvements in policing and criminal justice services, tackle crime and anti-social behaviour, and commission services that support victims and reduce offending.

This is an important opportunity to have your voice heard, please do come along to St Columba’s Church tomorrow evening and take part in the conversation.

Community Transport Customer Consultation 2025

Community Transport Customer Consultation Reminder

South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority is launching a consultation aimed at current registered users and non-users of Community Transport (CT) Monday 14th July, for an opportunity for CT users and non-users to tell (SYMCA) what they think of the service and/or any barriers to using the service.

Registered customers who have not used CT for over 6 months will receive a paper copy of the survey and have until Sunday 24th August to complete and send back via the pre-paid envelope.
This survey will also be available on the Travel South Yorkshire website or via the QR link.

Crosspool Ghost Sign

Ghost signs are silent storytellers, etched into the very brickwork of our communities. These faded, hand-painted advertisements offer a nostalgic glimpse into bygone eras, snapshots of commerce, culture, and everyday life.

One striking example lives on the gable end of the Cocker and Carr building: the “Natural No. 1 Processed Peas” sign. Timeworn but enduring, it speaks volumes about the area’s local identity and trading history. Its survival is thanks to the resilient oil-based paints of the past, whose pigments have weathered decades of wind, rain, and urban change.

Now, with the Crosspool Forum seeking to partner with local artist to safeguard this visual relic, its importance becomes even more poignant. Preserving it is more than just restoring a wall, it’s about protecting a piece of living heritage.

That it has remained so legible is a testament to past craftsmanship. Losing it would mean losing a window into the soul of Crosspool and that’s something too precious to fade away and disappear forever.

Spar Changes Ownership

Due to a change in ownership this Tuesday 15th July, the Spar in Crosspool will be closed during the day and reopen again in the evening.

On behalf of the Crosspool community, the Crosspool Forum extends a warm welcome to the incoming franchisee of Spar Crosspool, who will officially take over on Tuesday 15th July.

As a trusted voice for our vibrant community, we acknowledge the store’s vital role in daily life and its contribution to the spirit of service that defines Crosspool. We look forward to continuing our positive relationship with the store and offer our best wishes for it’s success and growth.

We’re confident that under new ownership, Spar will honour its local heritage while embracing innovation, serving the evolving needs of all who call Crosspool home.

Scarecrow Competiton Results

A Farmyard Festival of Fun!

The 2025 community scarecrow competition brought the countryside to our doorsteps with this year’s theme: “On the Farm.” From front gardens to schoolyards, a whimsical wave of straw-stuffed creations popped up across the neighbourhood, each one bursting with charm and imagination.
Think mooing cows with cheeky grins, hens donning bonnets, and tractors made from wheelbarrows! The standard was sky-high, making the judges’ job delightfully difficult. With so much talent on display, every corner turned revealed another masterpiece.
Hats off to all who took part—you turned Crosspool into a patchwork of playful rural magic!

After careful consideration scrutinising all the scarecrows entered, Rob & Jan at “Pet Supplies” chose the following winner and runners-up.

First Prize winner – “Clarkson and his Cow” Denbank Avenue, receives a certificate and a £25 voucher kindly donated by Green Cross Chemist, Crosspool.

First runner-up – “Henelope” Lydgate Hall Crescent, receives a certificate and a voucher for two fish & chip dinners kindly donated by the Crosspool Fish Bar, Crosspool.

Second runner-up – “Superhero farm to fork” Sandygate Road, receives a certificate and a £20 voucher kindly donated by Hudsons Kitchen, Crosspool.

On behalf of the community of Crosspool, we would like to take this opportunity to give a big” Thank You” to Jane Saxton and family for organising this year’s scarecrow competition, and also to express our gratitude to Rob & Jan for making the time in their busy diaries to support the Crosspool community by selecting this year’s winners.

Thank you to everyone who entered this year’s competition. The organisers hope that the variety of entertaining individual creations encourages everyone to enter next year’s competition.
