Crosspool Festival 2016 programme now online

The 2016 festival runs Friday 24 June-3 July, with the Summer Fayre scheduled for Saturday 2 July.

This year’s festival theme is Carnival, a summer party with great activities happening on the streets to coincide with this year’s Olympics in Brazil, the queen’s 90th celebrations and more besides.

The organisers are hoping it’ll be a colourful and exciting week for the community to get out and about, meet the neighbours, make new friends and try new activities.

You may have already picked up a copy of the programme from one of our local shops. If not you can browse it online now!

Police appeal following Crosspool collision

Police are appealing for witnesses following a collision involving a pedestrian and a black Vauxhall Astra on Selborne Road around 9:50am on Thursday.

The pedestrian, an elderly woman, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Anyone witnessing the collision is asked to call 101 quoting incident number 236 of 2 June 2016.

Our thoughts are with the pedestrian and her family and friends.

The winning photo in last year’s photo competition

To enter the competition, take a great photo that shows ACTION and email it to us. It doesn’t need to capture movement in the photo as that is technically quite challenging but just something that suggests some action is about to happen or that there is a sense of movement.

Remember, the photo should make an impact, tell a story and follow the theme of ACTION.

Categories are open to anyone living/working/ studying in the area and are as follows:

  • Primary (5-11 yrs)
  • Secondary (12-18 yrs)
  • Adult (19 yrs+)

Closing date for entries is Sunday 19 June.

Email your photo as a jpg to: crosspoolfestivalphotos@gmail.com.

Please state:

  • Your name
  • Age category
  • Your contact email and phone number
  • A caption for your photo so the judges clearly understand by your description what is happening in the photo.

There will be prizes for all the category winners.

The adult winner’s photo will also be included in this year’s Crosspool Calendar. The best three in each category will be put on the Crosspool Forum website www.crosspool.info and voting for the winners will start from Monday 20 June. The exhibition at St Columba’s will display all the entries on Wednesday 29 June from 1.30pm-4.30pm. You can also meet photographers from Sheffield Photographic Society, see their photos on display and ask them your photo questions. Maybe we can start a local photography group? The winners will be announced at St Columba’s on Wednesday 29 June at 4pm. Tea and coffee will be provided by St Columba’s.

Sainsbury’s announce plans for The Plough pub

The Plough, Sandygate Road

Supermarket chain Sainsbury’s is to submit a planning application to turn The Plough pub on Sandygate Road into a convenience store.

The people running The Plough, which is opposite the oldest football ground in the world, called last orders in April.

There had been speculation over the future of the pub for many months. Regulars launched a Save the Plough Facebook campaign and it was registered as an asset of community value, with the hope that a community ownership model could be explored.

Sainsbury’s are now leasing the property from Enterprise Inns and will submit planning applications to Sheffield City Council in the coming weeks to adapt the building.

We’ll post links to them as soon as we see it on the council website.
