Roadshow planned for upcoming Manchester Road works

Work as part of Streets Ahead to upgrade Manchester Road will start towards the end of November.

The streetlights will be replaced as part of the first phase of the project, with the installation process taking up to six weeks. The Manchester Road trees will also be assessed and possibly replaced.

You can find out more about the planned work at an upcoming roadshow which will be visiting Stephen Hill church on Tuesday 24 November, 4-7pm.

Lydgate Lane trees earmarked for felling

200-year-old trees on Lydgate Lane are scheduled to be cut down as part of the Streets Ahead project.

Notices have been placed by Amey/Streets Ahead on three trees stating they have developed a structural fault and are to be felled within two weeks – possibly on Wednesday 28 October – as part of the city-wide programme to improve Sheffield’s roads. 

Campaigners have organised an emergency meeting at 5pm Sunday 25 October in The Sportsman pub on Benty Lane – anyone with an interest in the fate of these trees is invited. Dave Dillner from Sheffield Tree Action Group will be attending. A petition to save the trees is also available for signing in Enhance Hair Salon.

Anyone wanting to express their views on the proposals to representatives from Amey and local councillors will also have the opportunity to do so at the next Crosspool Forum Open Meeting/AGM on 29 October at St Columba’s Church, 7pm start.

Petition launched over off-centre Sandygate Road markings

Concerned Crosspool residents are collecting signatures for a petition regarding the position of the painted white lines on Sandygate Road.

The road markings were repainted following resurfacing work and have divided the road into a wider uphill lane and a narrower downhill lane.

Resident Marie Biggs explained: “My main concern is that vehicles are travelling far too fast up the road and hogging the white lines. This doesn’t leave any space for vehicles and cyclists travelling downhill towards Crosspool, which have to cross the white lines to pass parked vehicles.

“Amey/Streets Ahead told me that the reason the lines are as they are is to allow for the safe overtaking of cyclists coming uphill – but what ablout the cyclists travelling downhill?

“And, if there was to be a collision, would drivers travelling down the road always be deemed to be at fault, purely because they are straddling the white lines?”

The Plough pub listed as community asset

The Plough pub on Sandygate Road has been listed as an asset of community value.

This means that that in the event of it being put up for sale the group lodging the application would be given time to come up with a bid to buy it. There is no guarantee that this bid would be accepted by the seller.

With the rumoured threat of the pub being sold and turned into a convenience store, a group of regulars have launched an online change.org petition and a paper petition in the pub that you’re invited to sign. There’s also a Save the Plough Facebook community group which they’ll use to keep everyone up to date.

The Plough is one of three remaining pubs in Crosspool and it is believed that a public house has stood on the site for around 400 years. The pub is famously located opposite Hallam FC’s Sandygate stadium, the oldest football ground in the world.

A bid to get The Plough pub listed as a community asset is due to be heard by the council on Thursday 4 June.

Labour’s Geoff Smith holds Crookes seat in 2015 local election

Labour’s Geoff Smith has been reelected as a councillor for Crookes in the 2015 local elections.

The results were as follows:

  • Geoff Smith, Labour Party: 3,818
  • Harry Matthews, Liberal Democrats: 2,965
  • Julian Briggs, Green Party: 1,868
  • Will Lockwood, The Conservative Party: 1,348
  • Andrew Pemberton, UK Independence Party (UKIP): 847
  • Nick Hall, Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition: 121

There were a total of 15,398 votes with a turnout of 72.3%.

In the general election, Nick Clegg retained his Sheffield Hallam seat, but with a much reduced majority.

Boundary Commission recommends Crookes ward is renamed Crookes and Crosspool

Stephen Hill church polling station: could be in Crookes and Crosspool council ward from 2016

Crookes local council ward could be renamed Crookes and Crosspool in time for the 2016 elections.

The recommendation from the the Local Government Boundary Commission for England follows a twelve-week public consultation on draft proposals that draw new boundaries for each council ward across Sheffield.

The proposed new electoral arrangements must now be implemented by parliament, with the hope that the changes will come into force for the council elections next year.
