The Duck House farm shop grand opening this weekend in Rivelin Valley

The Duck House farm shop logoA family-run farm shop relaunches in Rivelin valley this weekend, offering meat from their own farm and a range of Sheffield-sourced produce.

The Duck House is based at Coppice House Farm and was previously Coppice House Farm Shop. New owners Tom and Jess Ducker are no strangers to the business, with Tom’s father and grandfather both once responsible for running the old shop. Jess previously owned Gerty’s Pork and was previously named a  Sheffield food hero.

Tom and Jess explained: “We’re focused on quality local produce, that’s why all the meat we sell is straight from our own farm and butchered on site to give you the freshest and finest produce.

“We’re keen to support other local businesses therefore all the other great products you’ll see at The Duck House are sourced from Sheffield – or the nearest we can get.”

“With our on site butcher Frank, if you want a specific cut of meat to try that new recipe we can do it for you right then and there.”

The Duck House farm shop opened with a soft launch last weekend and and will have its official opening over the coming weekend (12-13 April 2014).

Opening times are Thursday-Saturday 9am-5pm and Sunday 10am-3pm.

Hallam Chase 2013 report and results

Runners competing in the 2012 Hallam Chase

A good turnout of 57 runners endured the grey drizzle to compete in the 2013 Hallam Chase in Crosspool last week.

Den Bank was greasy but the rest of the route was good underfoot and allowed John Alexander (CGCC) to lead the men home and Katy Bennett (Dark Peak), the ladies. Peter Stenton (Dark Peak) retained the youngest runners prize and Gerry Lax (Dark Peak) the oldest.

Being handicapped, with the slower runners off first and the fastest 10-15 minutess later, the actual fastest runners was David Lunn (Dark Peak) in a time of 24 minutes 22 seconds. John Spencer ranked the runners in the handicap and deserves praise as the runners returned in a good group.

Prizes where donated by local solicitors, Taylor and Emmet. They have helped out for many years; without their generosity the event wouldn’t work as well.

Next year’s event will be on Tuesday 27 May 2014 (and for those who want to prepare its Tuesday 26 May for 2015!)

Thanks also go to Richard Storer and the Hallam Cricket Club for hosting the event, Ian and Judy Thomas for managing the results, plus Les Outwin and David Price for officiating.

The event now has a website www.thehallamchase.org.uk containing event information and recent results. Hallamshire Harriers, who marshal the event, train in Hillsborough Tuesday and Thursday evening and can be contacted via www.hallamshireharriers.co.uk.

Update on Bell Hagg Inn tower conversion

The Bell Hagg Inn is being converted to a house
The Bell Hagg Inn is being converted to a house

The former Bell Hagg Inn, which has overlooked the Rivelin Valley from the Manchester Road approach in to Crosspool for well over 100 years, is being converted into a seven-bedroom family home.

For a period the public house was also known as The John Thomas before it finally closed in 2005.

It’s commonly believed that the original building was erected in 1832 as a five-storey house for Dr Hodgeson, who had built it as a folly to antagonise the Vicar of Stannington after he turned down a generous donation because he had made much of his fortune from gambling.

Before becoming a pub at the beginning of the last century, the building was used as a tea room by workers from the quarry across the road (now occupied by the Valleyside Garden Centre) and travellers stopping off between Sheffield and Manchester, and on occasion to secure prisoners destined for the assizes.

The present owner, who bought this vandalised property from the receivers, has started to extensively renovate the main five-storey stone built tower that hides the sheer drop at the back.

The building has stunning views across Rivelin Valley

Some of the tower’s small rooms that can be seen from the road are being knocked together and a covered link is being proposed to the already converted four-storey barn at the back. This link is to facilitate the future maintenance of the pub tower and will have a large glazed area and a sedum roof designed to blend into the surrounding green belt landscape.

In securing planning permission for the changes to this historic building, the new owner has had to get a bat licence to ensure bats are not disturbed. This will limit the times at which work can be carried out.

Hillside Harvest volunteers build a bridge and steps

Rivelin Valley-based Hillside Harvest have sent the following report and photos from their second open day of 2013:

Hillside Harvest open day: building a bridge
Hillside Harvest open day: building a bridge

Just recently, we held our second Open Day of 2013. This time our training session was on ‘plot planning’ aimed both at the beginner and the experienced gardener led by an expert from ‘Grow Sheffield’. Once again, a good crowd of new people turned up on a cold, but dry day! Even a few from the previous Open Day returned. There were also tours of the site, which was showing signs of life, despite the weather conditions.

As usual, lunch was a shared affair, centred on a vegetable stew. People are very generous, so there was more than enough to share.

We have a Growing Committee who draws up a plan of when certain activities have to be done and what time of year. But, because of the variable weather, it is still a bit of hit and miss as to whether the timing is right! Yet, we still see quite a bit of produce showing itself at the right times.

On the day a bridge and steps were built to make access easier to help everyone get from the Rivelin Valley Road car park to the lower plots in our block – so hopefully helping all the plot holders in the area.

We received help from a couple of students, who spent quite a few back-breaking hours getting them just right! Also tackled, were the putting up of supports for the fruit plants.

So, you can gather, even though hard work is involved, there is much fun and laughter and a sense of community. If anyone is interested in joining us, using their skills, even if they are not in the gardening area, there is always plenty to do, as well as making new friends, please contact Hillside Harvest via nick.rousseau@hillsideharvest.org.uk.

Volunteers dig in at Hillside Harvest open day

Rivelin Valley-based Hillside Harvest have sent the following report and photos from last weekend’s open day. Their next open day is all about plot planning and is taking place on Saturday March 16 from 11am.

On a sunny, dry Saturday in February, we came together for our first Open Day in 2013.

Apart from our members, we had a very eager group of students from the University of Sheffield, and a good number of other visitors. The students made quite a difference to the various areas of the site, including bringing back to life a number of plots.

The visitors were treated to an in-depth training session, by a local expert, on composting, learning such things as the importance of getting the balance between the right amounts of nitrogen and carbon-based products!

In the middle of the day, we all gathered for a shared lunch of a vegetable stew and a number of cakes (though not together!). It was also a time of getting to know each other and to share our joys and failures in composting and other gardening activities.
