A recent journey on a number 51 bus inspired this poem by Tom Gray
51 bus
Raymond drives a 51 Though he’d rather be a writer, There’s little time to sit and think, When he’s driving a late night(er)
Loading up with drunken fools, A couple getting frisky, Someone’s fainted on the upper deck And downstairs wreaks of whisky.
Up Glossop Road and Western Bank, Past hospitals and parks, It’s a lonely life for a gentle soul, A poet of the dark.
Once Broomhill’s gone, there’s the Hallam Towers, He goes through all the gears, Deep down he knows his dream is dead And he’ll be doing this for years,
So next time you board a Sheffield bus Whether it’s to Jordanthorpe or Beighton, Spare a thought for Raymond’s dream To be the next Len Deighton.
Tapton Hill Congregational Church invites you to join them in the church garden just before 11 am tomorrow, Saturday 11th November, for a service of remembrance around the Crosspool community memorial.
The Rev. Suzanne Nockels will lead you in prayer and reflection to remember the sacrifice of those around the world whose life has been touched by conflict.
A lone trumpeter will play the last post and the two-minute silence will be observed.
“We will never forget the cost of war, nor the value of peace”.
On Sunday, there will also be a Remembrance Sunday Service in the Chapel at 2.45 p.m.
A green belt woodland that connects Crosspool with the Peak District, is going to be sold at an auction and there are already potential buyers who have ‘leisure and nature’ interests. The woodland, called Hagg Wood, is located in the Rivelin Valley and covers 2.8 acres of mature broadleaf trees. It is situated in the Sandygate area, near Valleyside Garden Centre and Hallamshire Golf Club, and adjacent to Burnt Stones Grove. Hagg Wood is a popular destination for walkers who enjoy the scenic paths.
Recently guests from the South West of the City were invited to Tapton Hall to celebrate the South West People Keeping Well and International Day of Older People, facilitated and funded by Age UK Sheffield/ People Keeping Well, Sheffield City Council and the Partners of the South West PKW network.
Guests enjoying the event
Joanna Woodward, Community Development Officer for Age UK Sheffield who leads PKW in the southwest of Sheffield said “This event was a fantastic showcase of what can be achieved when a network of local organisations come together to improve the lives of people living in the community and encourage people to get involved in volunteering. Over the last 6 years, the People Keeping Well network in the southwest has worked together to help prevent loneliness and social isolation. The Partnership has grown from 12 original partners to in excess of 60, and increased activity provision to accommodate over 100 people per month. New provision provides opportunities to try something new, build relationships and create support networks outside. We hope to host many more events of this type and would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make this event the success that it was”.
Charles Turner chatting to some of the delightful children
Kathy Markwick, Freelance Community Consultant added “The event was a huge success and we were all delighted that the new Master Cutler, Charles Turner, could join us as a special guest. Guests were treated to a delicious Afternoon Tea and an awesome performance by musician/vocalist, Oliver Harris. Thirty children from Westbourne School also joined us – their choir was amazing and the soloists/musicians’ performances were both spine-tingling and tear-jerking. Intergenerational events are wonderful as everyone has so much to gain”.
The new Master Cutler said “Whilst being the Master Cutler is about promoting the manufacturing industry in Sheffield, Hallamshire and South Yorkshire there is also a strong civic element to what we do – after all manufacturing relies on the skills of the workforce from this region. As such it was a delight to join in with the International Day of Older People celebration at Tapton Hall, organised by Age UK Sheffield and Sheffield City Council. It was a wonderful opportunity to say thank you to the generation that has done so much for the City”.
Chris Hattam, the Headmaster and Charles Turner
Chris Hattam, the Headmaster of Westbourne School added ”It was a joy and a privilege to be able to join the event organised by Age UK Sheffield, People Keeping Well and Sheffield City Council. As a school, we place great emphasis on the value of community and having the confidence to interact with all we meet. Our pupils loved the event with one stating “It is the best day of my life!”. I have no doubt that our children gained as much from joining the party as everyone else there, probably even more so when they were chatting to the assembled partygoers. I would thoroughly encourage every Head to help support events like this as it was a mutually beneficial experience.”
Simon Mills, MD Twelve Trees Care said “Some of our residents and staff attended the celebration event at Tapton Hall. Our residents particularly enjoyed singing along to the very talented Oliver Harris. The afternoon tea was lovely, sparking a debate on whether cream or jam should be applied first. We were also thrilled to see the talented children from Westbourne School perform, which touched the hearts of all who attended.”
Kathryn Rawling, Dementia & Wellbeing Manager for Sheffcare said “A huge thank you from the residents of Grange Crescent Care Home for the invitation to the International Day of Older People Celebration held at Tapton Hall. It was a lovely event in a super setting, an opportunity for our residents to get together, socialise and see people from other Care Homes and organisations. I was particularly moved by one of our residents who came to the event. This lady was quiet, unsure of what she had come to and a little uncomfortable. She is new to Grange Crescent and long-term care in a Care Home – a big life change for her. Over the course of the day, her mood lifted totally, she enjoyed mixing with other residents from Grange Crescent and the people at the event. She had a delightful time enjoying the music provided by Oliver Harris and the wonderful performances by the children from Westbourne School. She shared with me that it was a really pleasing day and was full of smiles. I feel that this event will have helped her realise that despite all the recent changes in her life she will still get opportunities to see and mix with people in the community. This is so important for people’s wellbeing. The time and effort given to these events by Jo Woodward, Community Development Officer for Age UK Sheffield, Mubarak Hassan, Community Services Officer for Sheffield City Council, and Kathy Markwick, Freelance Community Consultant, is outstanding and should be celebrated. Thank you..”.
Everyone is invited to join us on Saturday 11th November at 10.45 a.m., for a brief ceremony to commemorate Armistice Day. We will remember and honour the memory of all those who have been affected by conflict. The ceremony will take place near the community-funded memorial outside Tapton Hill Congregational Church where a military bandsman will play the last post and we observe the two-minute silence. “We will never forget the cost of war, nor the value of peace”.
On Sunday, there will also be a Remembrance Sunday Service in the Chapel at 2.45 p.m.
Stephen Hill Methodist Church are delighted to invite you to join them for a special festive evening of music and joy.
On Wednesday 13th of December at 7.45 pm, The Salvation Army Band will make their annual visit to perform their wonderful tunes for us. Nothing says ‘Christmas’ quite like the sound of a brass band and many people consider that their festive season starts on this night.
Don’t miss this chance to enjoy The Salvation Army Band’s annual concert and to support their praiseworthy cause. There is no admission fee, but you will have an opportunity to contribute a donation to the ongoing work of the Salvation Army in Sheffield if you wish.
Kathy Marwick is now preparing for the next Friendship Lunch at the Crosspool Tavern on Monday 13th November at 12 noon.
These events are the result of Kathy’s dedication and enthusiasm for reaching out to those who feel isolated or alone. She believes that everyone deserves to have meaningful social interactions and opportunities to participate in activities that enrich their lives. Kathy has worked hard to create a welcoming and supportive environment for all the attendees, and she hopes that you will come and enjoy these events as much as she does.
These events are fun and welcoming, and they provide a great opportunity for those living on their own to socialise and enjoy themselves.
Kathy understands how hard and stressful it can be for families and carers who look after their loved ones. This is an opportunity for them to also have a break from their daily routine and find some solace.
Some of the guests may not recall the event later, but they will surely have had a good time while they are there, and that matters a lot.
The UK will switch from BST to GMT tomorrow Sunday 29th October at 2am. This means that the clocks will be adjusted backward by one hour, from 2am to 1am. GMT is the standard time zone for the UK during the winter months.
A planning application has been submitted for a new detached house with a basement garage and the provision of a public footpath to an adjacent site.
The proposed development on Land at the corner of Moorbank Drive & Coldwell Lane Crosspool, Sheffield S10 5TH, involves the removal of three mature trees that are currently under a Tree Preservation Order. (Tree Preservation Order No. 808/296) The trees are of high amenity value and contribute to the character and appearance of the area. Felling the trees would result in a significant loss of biodiversity and green infrastructure, and would be contrary to the local and national planning policies that seek to protect and enhance the natural environment.
The deadline for public comments is 8th November 2023. You can view the details and submit your feedback online Sheffield City Council Planning Apps 23/01906/FUL.
