Big week starts with defeat for Countrymen

Despite taking a first half lead through Martin Brissett, Hallam FC’s week of three home games began on Saturday with a 4-1 defeat to Lincoln Moorlands Railway.

The Countrymen’s next outing is the derby match against Dinnington Town tonight at Sandygate, who are just two places above them in the league.

As the Crosspool club’s Twitter account mentions, Sandygate is the place to be to see lots of goals: there have been 25 in their last five home games. Unfortunately, only three have been for Hallam!

South West Community Assembly community group review

On Monday representatives from Crosspool Forum will be attending a South West Community Assembly community group review at Sheffield town hall.

The purpose of the get together is to work out how local groups can be more involved in the work that the South West Community Assembly does on behalf of the wider community.

Matthew Rush, South West Community Assembly Officer, explains more:

Since before the official launch of the South West Community Assembly in May 2009 we have been looking at developing engagement with local groups. So far we have achieved mixed success and would now like to review the situation and look at using a model that is fit for purpose across the four wards. The hope is that we can involve groups more in the work that the Assembly does on behalf of the wider community.

Rather that replicating our previous attempts to nurture a formal relationship with community groups through the Partner Panel we would like to hear what your group has to say and what you feel is the best way forward.

It will be chaired by Councillor Mike Reynolds and include workshops as a way of exploring the best way forward.

Also invited to the session are representatives from Dore and Totley Ward Forum, Ecclesall Forum and Hallam Community Youth Association. We’ll report back on how it goes.

Crosspool police box open on Saturday 20 November

This Saturday 20 November between 10am and 12 noon the Crosspool police box on Lydgate Lane will be open to allow residents to raise issues either with the police or possibly a councillor.

The police are currently investigating the anti-social behavior of a small number of students in the precinct at lunchtime. Drug dealing is also becoming a concern, and the police would welcome any information that you may have.

You can contact PC Louise Atha by emailing louise.atha@southyorks.pnn.police.uk.

The Lydgate Lane police box is at the top of the hill, near Tapton Hill transmitter.

Crosspool wins Sheffield in Bloom award

The photos below, taken over the summer, show some of the dozen hanging baskets and four planters in the precinct at Crosspool.

Entering the Lord Mayor’s Sheffield in Bloom for the first time this year, Crosspool Forum’s impressive displays were successful in winning the Community Silver award.

Our thanks go to Norton Nurseries for making up such vibrant and spectacular displays, and Streetforce for maintaining them so admirably throughout the summer.

Funds allowing, and with the help and support of precinct businesses and shops, Crosspool Forum will be aiming for gold in 2011.

Smiths of Sheffield 15 year anniversary

Sheffield chef Richard Smith is taking a trip down memory lane next month with a nostalgic evening to celebrate fifteen years in Crosspool.

Before its current incarnation as Artisan, the Sandygate Road restaurant was previously Thyme and prior to that it originally opened as Smiths of Sheffield – or Smiths as it was known.

On Monday 13 December at Artisan, Richard will be cooking some of the favourite dishes from Smiths days, including Thai tiger prawn cake, honey and rosemary glased shank of lamb and trio of creme brulee (view the menu here – jpg, 429KB).

For more information or to make a booking call 0114 266 6096.

Hallam hit rock bottom

Hallam find themselves propping up the Northern Counties East League Premier Division after a 2-0 defeat to Long Eaton United at Sandygate on Saturday.

The loss leaves the Countrymen with just 8 points from 14 league outings. They are level on points with Liversedge but have an inferior goal difference.

Hallam’s next match is against Lincoln Moorlands Railway on Saturday at Sandygate.

High winds cause traffic light damage in Crosspool

Last night’s wind and rain have damaged a set of traffic lights in Crosspool.

Gusts of upto 80mph left part of a traffic light casing hanging by a wire at the busy Manchester Road crossing near local schools.

Despite the damage, it appears that the lights are still operational and an engineer was on hand to begin repairs at around 8am this morning.

Did the bad weather cause any damage elsewhere in Crosspool? If you spot anything, comment below or let us know.
