Runners competing in the 2012 Hallam Chase

Hallam Chase Fell Race is the oldest continuously run Fell Race in the world.
95 Runners will set off from Hallam Football/Cricket Club’s Sandygate ground, Sandygate Road at 7.30 pm this TUESDAY 28th May 2024

The Hallam Chase, a time-honoured tradition dating back to 1862, is a testament to the enduring spirit of community and athletic excellence in Sheffield.
Organized by the Hallamshire Harriers, this challenging 3¼ mile race with an 800-foot climb is a highlight for local runners and spectators alike.

The event, which starts and finishes at the historic Crosspool football ground, home to Hallam Football/Cricket Club, takes participants on a scenic yet demanding route down Coldwell Lane, Den Bank, the Rivelin Valley, and up Tofts Lane. The record to beat, set by Trevor Wright in 1968, stands at a swift 19 minutes and 42 seconds.

This race not only offers a rigorous physical challenge but also serves as a living link to the area’s rich sporting heritage.

Friendship Lunches

A Friendship Lunch is a monthly social event with live entertainment.
Held at lovely restaurants/pubs, tickets include a delicious 2-course lunch.

It is aimed at the elderly, lonely and/or socially isolated.
The event is ‘dementia friendly’ and therefore ideal for those living with dementia and their families/carers, although we must point out that 1-1 support or personal care at the events is not provided.
If guests do need extra support, they are advised to bring a family member or carer.

The Friendship Lunch offers a wonderful opportunity for the elderly, lonely and/or socially isolated. To meet old/make new friends. To dine and dance in a warm and safe environment.

Festival Concert 2024

Hagg Lane Allotments

Although The allotment holders at the Hagg Lane Allotments no longer hold large annual sales, their Society hut on Back Lane Crosspool, Sheffield, S10, UK  (opposite Clough Fields) is brimming with locally grown plants.
These surplus young plants include tomatoes, brassicas, squash, courgettes, beans, and salad crops. What’s remarkable is that most of these plants have been cultivated without chemicals and are well-suited to the area’s conditions.
If you’re interested, you can visit their hut every Sunday morning from 9:30am to 12:30 pm to purchase these healthy plants and kickstart your own garden! 🌱🍅🥦🌽.

Crosspool Bake Off 2024

This year’s Crosspool Bake Off is looking as if it will be a wonderful event for baking enthusiasts to show off their skills in a competitive yet friendly environment.
While it shares similarities with the well-known Great British Bake Off, in so much as the format is of amateur bakers competing to impress judges, it offers a unique community feel that might appeal to those who enjoy the camaraderie and challenge of a baking competition.

Participants are invited to bring their creations to St Columba’s Church from 10 am to 12 noon on Tuesday, 2nd July, with results and tasting festivities occurring from 1 pm to 4 pm.

Whether you’re a seasoned baker or someone who finds joy in creating, participating in events like the Crosspool Bake Off can be a perfect way to engage with fellow baking aficionados, learn new techniques, and perhaps even gain recognition for your baking prowess.

Sheffield Astronomy Society

Sheffield Astronomy Society will be holding its monthly guest speaker evening tomorrow, 14th May at the Ranmoor Parish Centre.

The speaker is Andy Green who will be speaking on Aurora – in search of the goddess of the dawn. What is the aurora, what causes it, and where can it be seen. Hopefully, some of these questions will be answered.

The talk will start promptly at 8pm, free to members, guests £3.

Northern Lights over Crosspool

The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, are a stunning natural event that sometimes appears in the skies above here in Crosspool .

These beautiful displays happen when charged particles from the sun bump into atoms in the Earth’s atmosphere, creating colorful curtains that move across the night sky.

Although they are more common in polar areas, certain conditions, like a strong solar storm, can push the aurora further south, making them visible in places like Crosspool.

Last night, people in Crosspool got to see this rare event, which turned the night sky into a breathtaking sight.

Currently, there’s no significant solar activity indicating a high chance of seeing the aurora over Crosspool tonight. However, conditions can change, so it’s good to keep an eye on local forecasts and aurora alert services for any updates. The best opportunity to witness this amazing light show is on a clear, dark night away from city lights.

Crosspool Festival 2024

2024 Crosspool Festival programme

Featuring a variety of activities suitable for all ages, The Crosspool Festival is set to run from June 28th to July 7th, 2024. The festival is a vibrant event of local talent, diversity and a sense of community.


A full program of the festival’s events has been delivered with the summer issue of the Crosspool Clarion, is also available to download here.

Proceeds from the festival will benefit two charities: Assist Sheffield and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).

Assist Sheffield offers support to those seeking sanctuary in the city, providing accommodation, information, and other essential services.
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international medical humanitarian organization that provides emergency aid in conflict zones and areas affected by diseases.
