Thumbs up for Rivelin park paddling pools proposals

Visitors to Rivelin park cafe and Hillsborough library have given their approval for plans to refurbish the paddling pools at Rivelin.

Some concerns were raised over the need for additional seating, more litter bins and better car parking and these have been fed back to the designers to see how they can be addressed as the final details are developed

The council hopes the contractor will be able to start work in April once the final designs are approved, with the intention that the improvements will be complete in time for the summer holidays.

Lost ginger cat: have you see Lola in Crosspool?

On Thursday 22 March a two-year-old ginger cat called Lola went missing from her home on Stephen Hill Road. Have you seen her?

She is quite timid and usually only ventures around a couple of local gardens. She can be a bit nosey though so could be in a shed or garage.

The owners are asking whether local residents could check garages, basements, greenhouses and sheds in case Lola is trapped inside.

If you think you might have seen Lola, please ring the owner on 07812 650396.

Police helicopter searches for offender over Sandygate

Did you see or hear the police helicopter SY99 flying over Crosspool this afternoon?

South Yorkshire Police Air Operations confirmed that around 1:40pm this afternoon it was searching for an offender following a burglary. A stolen car was left on a driveway. Enquiries are ongoing.

Last year it was announced that the South Yorkshire Police helicopter would be replaced with one shared by regional forces. However later this week the South Yorkshire Police Authority will consider plans that would mean SY99 would be retained and used during peak times.

Crosspool WI branch meeting on Monday

The first full branch meeting of the Crosspool Women’s Institute (WI) will take place on Monday 19 March at St Columba’s church from 7-9pm.

Speaking on BBC Radio Sheffield this morning, Julia Connelly from Crosspool’s Craft Angels explained why the group has been set up: “In Crosspool there is a diverse range of ages, and a WI is something that can bring women together, especially young mums whose children have gone to school. A lot of our population also include professional people who have come to Sheffield for university and then stayed with no family living nearby.

“In the current economic climate, people are going back to traditional crafts and growing their own vegetables. Make-do-and-mend, vintage and shabby chic are all back in fashion. The traditional crafts have skipped a generation. A lot of women don’t do baking any more and people want to learn to knit.”

So far there are 34 people interested in joining the group. If you want to find out more then you can turn up on Monday or get in touch with Craft Angels via:

E-mail: crosspoolwi@live.co.uk
Telelephone: Julia Connelly (President) 07894 387406 or Liz Manson (Secretary) 07403 281609
Facebook page: Crosspool Women’s Institute
Twitter: @crosspoolwi

For the next seven days you’ll be able to listen again to the interview on Radio Sheffield on iPlayer. The Crosspool WI piece starts around 1.5 hours in.

Crosspool WI meetings are scheduled for the third Monday of the month at St Columba’s (7-9pm) and the fourth Monday of the month at Stephen Hill Church (1-3pm), except August.

Two new floral tubs confirmed for Manchester Road

The space outside Crosspool Tavern where two new planters will be located

Two new planters will be installed at the former entrance to Crosspool Tavern on Manchester Road.

The location will allow for continued pedestrian access to the pelican crossing, the pub entrance and the pavement in front of the pub.

The tubs will be delivered with soil and planting already prepared and Crosspool Forum will take on their future maintenance. An exact date for their arrival has not yet been confirmed.

This former entrance to the Tavern’s car park was earmarked for landscaping as part of the S10 corridor scheme in 2005, although this has not yet happened. The two new floral tubs are expected to make access to the pelican crossing safer.

In 2010 and 2011 Crosspool received Sheffield in Bloom awards for the quality of our floral displays in the precinct.
