One of the best rock climbers in the world will be sharing his experiences at a Crosspool Festival event.

Having climbed the hardest sport route in the UK, Steve McClure knew from early childhood encounters with the sandstone outcrops of the North York Moors that he was destined to be a rock climber.

Now Sheffield based, his new book, Beyond Limits, tells the story of a climber and his obsessive exploration of the sport, of finding a true passion, taking it to the limits, and then the careful balancing of this passion against other areas of life to give the greatest rewards.

Steve will be giving his illustrated talk A Life through Rock Climbing on Wednesday 1 July 7.30pm (bar open from 7pm) at Hallam FC clubhouse on Sandygate Road in Crosspool.

Admission is free, but there will be a retiring collection for festival charities. Signed copies of Steve’s book will be on sale.

The group is busily raising funds to support the 27 girls with the cost of costumes and travel for the October trip.

Local Businesses in Crosspool, Fulwood, Ranmoor and Broomhill have donated some fabulous prizes for a raffle. Tickets can be purchased at the Dance School Stephen Hill on Saturdays Mornings or by calling Lucy on 07854 285700.

Meanwhile, on Saturday 18 July they’ll hold a Magical Disney Fun Day at Stephen Hill Church from 10am-2pm.

Princess Elsa from Frozen, Cinderella and other guests will be meeting everyone and there will be a summer fair with cake stalls, a chocolate fountain, coffee, dancing, face painting, nail art, hair braiding, sideshows, princess & pirate crafts and princess pamper massages for parents. Come in fancy dress if you like!

Guided history walk around Crosspool on Tuesday 30 June

A guided history walk of Crosspool will depart at 10am from St Columba’s church on Tuesday 30 June.

The walk is led by Jan Millward and will take in historical places of interest in the Crosspool area with interesting stories about the people who lived and worked here. It’ll take about an hour and a half.

And if you don’t fancy the official history walk, get yourself a copy of Crosspool Chronicles walking guide, which will be on sale at the street market on Sunday 28 June and locally throughout festival week.

The walks cover Crosspool, Sandygate, Lydgate, Bell Hagg and Tapton Hill right back to 1695, looking at who lived here and where and what they did. There are lots of old photos and stories to enjoy.
