Following the torrential thunderstorm in the early hours, it was a murky start to 4 July.
As the low cloud and fine drizzle slowly cleared  throughout the morning, the CDYST sports field & hall on Coldwell Lane were gradually transformed, by an army of volunteers, into the setting for the Crosspool Forum Summer Fayre.
The  event was officially opened  by a lifelong Crosspool lady Faye Buxton, who earlier this year had moved from Sheffield to be nearer her family.
As  visitors arrived to enjoy the attractions, stalls and entertainment by local Irish dancers, the Yorkshire Chandelier Clog dancers,  Richard Francis Duo and the children’s favourite comedian/magician Barney Baloney, the sun broke through and shone for the whole afternoon.
A truly enjoyable day was had by everyone.
The organisers of the Fayre would like to thank everyone for attending the event and especially the team of dedicated volunteers who helped make the whole event possible.
Unwind at the end of festival week and get into the seventies groove this evening at St. Columba’s from 8—11pm.
It’s an evening of good-time music, karaoke, dancing and all round fun with the highly-regarded Shep’s Disco. Big hair and platform shoes are optional but not essential!
Tickets are £3.50 in advance from Crosspool Pet Supplies or on the door subject to availability. BYO – glasses available.
This means that that in the event of it being put up for sale the group lodging the application would be given time to come up with a bid to buy it. There is no guarantee that this bid would be accepted by the seller.
With the rumoured threat of the pub being sold and turned into a convenience store, a group of regulars have launched an online change.org petition and a paper petition in the pub that you’re invited to sign. There’s also a Save the Plough Facebook community group which they’ll use to keep everyone up to date.
The Plough is one of three remaining pubs in Crosspool and it is believed that a public house has stood on the site for around 400 years. The pub is famously located opposite Hallam FC’s Sandygate stadium, the oldest football ground in the world.
Crosspool Forum would like to say a big thank you to all at FirstBus for providing a first class coach for our trip to Chester Zoo.
FirstBus’s attention to keeping us well informed and the timekeeping of our driver Jed, who was very caring and patient, helped make the journey to and from the zoo a very memorable experience and an enjoyable occasion for the younger members of the Crosspool community.
Although being excited on the outward journey, the children were very well behaved, attentive and markedly, answering the animal quiz questions correctly.
Far from being tired on the journey home, after such an exciting and memorable day and despite being delayed for over an hour at Mottram, the children sang, played games and having had an exhausting but wonderful day, remained cheerful right up to our arrival back into Crosspool at just after 9pm.
The feedback from the twenty seven children and twenty six parents was extremely positive. All in all a very educational and worthwhile day out!
Here’s an account of the day from Lyla Dolini, age 7:
We met really early and I was so excited to go on a coach. The coach was really fun and I sat next to Erin and we watched programmes on my iPad.
Everyone who went to Chester Zoo was very surprised to see how big the zoo was. My favourite animals were elephants, monkeys, giraffes, bears, snakes, penguins and zebras. The giraffes were called Lillia, Dasher, Amelia (who was a baby) and Petal. Amelia was cute, but still very tall compared to me!
When at 4 o’clock we were finished at the zoo, we went to a hotel for dinner. The dinner was yummy and when everyone was finished we all went out into the field in the grounds of the hotel to play tig!
On the way home my little sister Anna fell asleep and we got stuck in a traffic jam, but it was ok as I was sitting next to Erin again.
The whole day was brilliant, thanks to the Crosspool Forum and FirstBus!
