You’re Invited to the Broomhill Library Heritage Hub for S10
Monday, November 3rd –3:30–6:00pm

Sheffield is a city of makers and its buildings are the blueprints of its ambition. From gothic arches to modern marvels, every structure has a tale to tell. This year, Heritage Open Days unlock the doors to discovery. Whether you’re tracing the trail from Percy Cane’s Garden to the General Cemetery or diving into Minecraft-inspired creativity at Broomhill Library, there’s a story waiting for you around every corner.

Join us for Tea, cake, and conversation as postgraduate students from the University of Sheffield’s Architecture Department share their reflections and ideas at the close of their six-week placement with us. Their poster presentation, Heritage Hub for S10 – Our Plans and Stories, starting outside, then moving indoors, celebrates local legacy and future possibilities.

This is Crosspool

On behalf of the Crosspool community, I extend our sincere thanks to Jack Todhunter for his exceptional video, This is Crosspool”. Your work brilliantly encapsulates the unique character and charm of our area, and we all deeply appreciate your creative effort.

Beyond gratitude, it’s worth noting how meaningful it is when art reflects local spirit, inspiring community pride and deeper connection among residents.

Crosspool Quilt goes on Display

Crosspool Quilt goes on display at Cocker and Carr from 11am Saturday April 3rd.

Crosspool Community Quilt

Earlier last year local resident and mother of three wonderful children, Physiotherapist Amy Chambers decided that Crosspool (a suburb to the west of Sheffield) should have something for future generations to lookback on, and remember how the community had coped with the current Covid19 pandemic.

Amy having a  vision of a  beautiful piece of history being made, encouraged everyone, throughout the recent lockdowns, to use their creative skills to stitch, draw, embroider, paint or print stamp on a square of cotton or lightweight material, to show how they were feeling during these extraordinary times.

Amazed by everyone’s creativity, Amy started the mammoth task of sewing together the hundreds of tiny squares to complete this piece of memorable history.

After several months of hard work Amy has now completed this amazing record of these extraordinary times.

Amy said. “I very much appreciate Cocker & Carr Estate Agents Sandygate Road agreeing to display the Community quilt for Crosspool and for the support from the Crosspool Forum”. “It has been a labour of love and I’m sure I’ll be up into the small hours adding the finishing touches to this unique piece of memorabilia before it finally goes on show tomorrow at 11am.
“Thanks to each and every one of you who has taken part. It’s got bigger than I ever could have planned and I really hope it gave you something to focus on during lockdown and we can all look forwarded for brighter days to come!

Another Piece of History is set to Disappear

Plough Inn Sandygate Road

Planning officers are recommending that the application to demolish the Plough Inn, Sandygate Road is approved; we are calling on our elected councillors to overturn that decision. Please let your local councillor know, before next Tuesday, August 4th, that our community is opposed to the loss of this landmark building.

Please see below contact details for our local councillors

The report from planning officers states that the condition of the building is not due to poor management or neglect by the owner but is due to break-ins and vandalism, but  there was no mention of the Enforcement Notice issued by the City Council!

The report states that the £50,000 rent for the pub as advertised by the owner was ‘reasonable’ but states that the majority of other comparable pubs were offered at ‘significantly less’.

The report states that there are two other pubs within 800m of the Plough but acknowledges that the Cherry Tree was saved even though there were pubs within 800m because the area around the Cherry Tree is ‘hilly’
It seems that Crosspool is not ‘hilly’

These are just some of the inconsistencies in the officers’ report.

The report will be considered by the Planning Committee next Tuesday, August 4th at 2 p.m. This is a virtual meeting that can view via a Webcast. You can find details here:

This is an artist impression of what is proposed to replace The Plough, if the planning officers recommendation is approved by councillors at next week’s meeting.

Something we’d like to Bring To Your Attention

This is written from the home of football, namely Sheffield. You will be aware of our claim and may well be aware of some of the initial contributions made by forward-thinking folk in Sheffield to the “Sheffield and soccer”.Hfc

The oldest football ground on the planet [1860] is that of Hallam FC, behind Sheffield FC which is the second oldest football club. The then landlord of the adjacent pub, “The Plough” at Sandygate, had formed a cricket club in 1850 and due to the establishment of Sheffield FC the members opened the ground up to football in 1860 https://www.hallamfc.co.uk/history.php  [A page worth visiting]

As with many locals,” The Plough” is currently closed and under threat of a developer turning the area into domestic housing.

The Plough has a unique pedigree football-wise and for over 150 years has been home to the pre and post-match camaraderie of thousands of those with a love of the game; it is an integral part of football’s history. It is believed that many of the original templates for the game were developed in The Plough

This could well be an FA rescue mission. The possibility of a pub, hotel, museum and only a few miles from Sheffield’s City Centre, an FA investment would pay dividends locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. Over the years this city has provided chairmen of the FA… notably Sir Charles Clegg 1890 [aka the Napoleon of Football]. He played in the first international 1872 and refereed FA cup finals! The Clegg Cup and Shield are the oldest schools’ football trophies in the world. Charles and his brother William were amazing influences on the game. Other Sheffield Chairmen of distinction were, Sir Andrew Stephen 1967 and Geoff Thompson, OBE 2010.

WE ARE THE GLOBAL HOME OF FOOTBALL …. and we believe deserve increased recognition from the Football Association; we trust that you do too.
